When Ethernet Is Worth It

Home working. A laptop on WiFi may show good speed, but video calls care about latency and packet loss. Ethernet makes the connection boring, which is exactly what work calls need.

CCTV and smart homes. Wired links keep cameras, recorders, access points and control hubs off the crowded wireless network. If you are planning CCTV as well, it is often cheaper and neater to think about the cable routes together.

How Cable Routes Usually Work

Every house is different, but most routes use some mix of loft space, cupboards, floor voids, garages, exterior walls and existing service paths. In many homes a neat external run is less disruptive than chasing internal walls, especially if the cable can follow drainpipes, corners or existing cable routes.

The aim is not just to get from A to B. It is to leave the building tidy, avoid future leaks, protect the cable from damage, and put network points where they will actually be useful.

Cat6, Cat6a or Something Else?

For most homes, Cat6 is the sensible default. It supports gigabit comfortably and can support faster speeds over shorter runs. Cat6a is thicker, less flexible and more awkward to terminate, but it makes sense for longer runs where 10GbE is genuinely part of the plan.

Do not obsess over cable labels before you know the route. A well-installed Cat6 cable in the right place beats a badly routed premium cable every time.

Sometimes. Anyone promising completely invisible cabling in every house without lifting, drilling or compromise is selling a fantasy. But a lot can be done neatly. Surface boxes in cupboards, short external routes, loft drops and careful entry points usually keep disruption modest.

The biggest choice is finish. A quick utility run to a garden office is a different job from a fully hidden cable to a living room media wall. Both can be correct; they just need to be priced honestly.
